With the deadline for the DRAW 25 Submissions fast approaching, we have been discussing ‘What Is Drawing?’
While traditionally, drawing could be thought of as fine, graphite work, we want to see artists push these limits, by playing with colour, materials and surfaces. The only requirement we have for this exhibition is that submissions are not reproductions of prints.
Submissions to DRAW25 are largely open to interpretation, from the basis of mark making to create an image, and we anticipate that the Judging Panel will have a wonderful variety of works to consider.
‘The Artist defines what a ‘drawing’ is.’ – Tim Mann, Artist / Creative Director, Blackfield Creatives.
To spark some inspiration, we thought we would share some examples of pushing the limits of drawing, so the team have collected a few images to give you an idea of what you could look into. Remember though, what you do is down to your own definition of drawing.

Please feel free to comment below with your ideas around drawing, do you agree with more traditional definitions, or do you like to push the limits of mark making? Or why not share some favourite methods of drawing, or pieces that have inspired you to draw.
Remember submissions for DRAW 25 close at midnight, 29th March 2025. Full Terms and Conditions, and the entry form can be found on our website here

Drawing is a visual description in whatever form you choose to use. From a young age, we use line, tone, shape and form in traditional methods to develop an understanding of the formal elements of drawing. Once mastered to any degree, it is only a skill to be used and abused in the act of description.
